IWhat is ART?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based, short-term psychotherapy that can provide significant relief from the distress associated with trauma, anxiety, and other psychological problems, often in just 1 to 3 sessions.
ART works by helping your brain reprogram the way distressing images and memories are stored, allowing you to retain the facts of an event while removing the intense emotional and physical reactions they once triggered.
What Makes ART Unique?
ART is a manualized, protocol-driven treatment that combines techniques from several traditional therapies—including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Guided Imagery—into a streamlined, highly effective process.
✔ Significant Relief in 1–3 Sessions ✔ No Need to Discuss Trauma Details ✔ Voluntary Image Replacement (VIR) ✔ Expert Telehealth for SC Lowcountry & NC
How Does an ART Session for Trauma Work?
ART is a directive therapy where the therapist guides you through a specific sequence of steps. You are always in control of the content and can pause the process at any time.
Target Identification: You and your therapist identify the specific distressing memory or negative image you want to work on.
Visualization & Eye Movements: You bring the image to mind and follow the therapist's hand with your eyes as it moves back and forth. These bilateral eye movements are thought to mirror the processing that occurs during REM sleep.
Desensitization: The eye movements help reduce the physical sensations and emotional intensity tied to the memory.
Image Replacement: The therapist guides you through Voluntary Image Replacement (VIR). You imagine a preferred outcome or a positive, peaceful image to replace the disturbing one intentionally. The factual memory remains, but the emotional response is rewritten.
Integration & Closure: The session concludes with a check to ensure you can now recall the original memory without the previous emotional distress, easily shifting to the new, positive image.
Because ART is designed for rapid change, we use a focused 75-minute format to ensure we have enough time to complete the targeted memory reconsolidation process. This extended session length ensures you have the space to safely process and integrate the change and leave the office feeling grounded and resolved.
Advanced ART protocols:
Targeting Intense Phobias and Addictions: Our brains can create intense, automatic "short-circuits" when exposed to certain cues—whether it is a phobia, a compulsive craving, or sudden panic. These specialized, advanced protocols pinpoint the exact visual or physical triggers that set off this cascade, neutralizing the automatic knee-jerk reaction so you can feel grounded and in control.
Bypassing Mental Blocks & Being "Stuck": When emotional distress is layered, abstract, or difficult to put into words, traditional talk therapy can stall. The advanced training utilizes innovative, fast-acting protocols that bypass these cognitive blocks. We work directly with how the brain processes these deep-rooted barriers, allowing you to break through stagnant emotional patterns rapidly.
Managing Addictions, ADHD, and OCD Patterns: For individuals navigating Addictions, ADHD, or OCD, the mind can feel locked in cycles of overwhelm, hyper-fixation, or chronic intrusive thoughts. Advanced protocols are uniquely tailored to help regulate the nervous system, disrupt repetitive behavioral loops, and ease the intense mental and physical anxiety driving these executive functioning challenges.
Conditions ART Can Help Treat
While highly recognized for its use with trauma, ART has been shown to be effective for a wide range of psychological issues:

Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and Phobias
Depression and Low Self-Esteem
Grief and Loss
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Performance Anxiety
ADHD
Addictions
Key Benefits of ART:
Quick Relief: Clients often report feeling significant relief after 1–3 sessions.
Image Replacement: You do not have to talk about the details of your trauma repeatedly. ART allows you to replace distressing images with positive, desired images.
Minimal Dialogue: ART is a visually and physically focused technique that relies less on verbal processing than traditional talk therapy.
Keep the Knowledge, Lose the Pain: ART aims to help you remember what happened without the pain of the event.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
ART is a short-term, evidence-based psychotherapy designed for speed. Most clients experience significant relief from the emotional and physical distress of a specific trauma in just 1 to 3 sessions. Because it uses a protocol-driven format, we can achieve in hours what traditional talk therapy often takes months to reach.
-
While both use bilateral eye movements, ART is more directive and streamlined. ART utilizes a technique called Voluntary Image Replacement (VIR), allowing you to intentionally rewrite how a distressing memory is stored in the brain. Many clients find ART provides faster symptomatic relief and requires less verbal processing than standard EMDR.
-
No. One of the greatest benefits of ART is that it relies on minimal verbal processing. You do not have to talk about the painful details of your trauma repeatedly. The focus is on the physical sensations and the images in your mind, making it an ideal choice for those who find "talk therapy" overwhelming or retraumatizing.

Voluntary Image Replacement (VIR) is the core of the ART process. It allows you to replace a distressing or "stuck" image with a positive, preferred image of your choosing. You keep the knowledge of what happened, but you lose the pain associated with it, effectively "reprogramming" the brain's emotional response.
